Soma Books Daily a community-based organization registered to operate in Bungoma, Kenya with the mission to promote a reading culture among rural communities and the urban poor by availing reading materials and teaching basic literacy skills.
In 2023, over 15% of Kenya’s population can still neither read nor write. Yet, literacy has a direct link with poverty since it limits one’s life choices. Within the country, Bungoma county lags with the illiteracy levels being higher than the national average. Most of the students fail their national examinations just because they cannot read English, which is the language for instruction as well as evaluation.

Transforming traditional art into tradable commodities:
Conflict has ravaged most of northern Kenya with the greater impact on women and children. Women, mostly left widowed or whose husbands were maimed during conflict, have stepped up to be the bread winners in their families. They do not only take care of daily nutritional survival but also pay school fees and ensure clothes on their backs. We train Samburu women to leverage on their traditionally acquired beading skill to produce modern products for sale. This will help them to cater to their family needs.
